8 Christmas in Coloma.
An old fashion Christmas is celebrated in Coloma each
year with demonstrations, carriage rides, crafts and
much more. In this annual event, Marshall Gold Discovery
State Historic Park recreates an old-fashioned,
1850's Christmas, with period crafts, music, strolling
musicians, historic trade demonstrations, 19th century
Christmas programs and plays in the Gold Discovery Museum,
and wreath-making. Vendors offer handmade crafts and
a variety of foods, including roasted chestnuts. Don't
miss the carriage rides and a visit from Santa and Mrs.
Claus! Historic cabins and houses furnished from different
eras are open for touring. The fully restored Coloma
Schoolhouse can be toured and experienced as it was

14 THE SOUND OF HOOF BEATS FROM PONY
EXPRESS TRAIL ... On December 14th, 2002
the sound of hoof beats will be heard from Pollock Pines
to Placerville. For the first time since 1998 the California
Division of the National Pony Express Association will
be carrying Christmas Cards. The Christmas Cards will
be from those in the community that want to give their
cards that “special personal touch.” The personal touch
being, carried by horseback and a special hand stamping
by the Pony Express. All Christmas cards must have the
correct postage in order to be carried. No extra large
or extra long cards please, only standard sizes can
be carried. There will be no charge to carry personal
cards. However, donations are gratefully appreciated.
All donations assist the Association; in keeping history
alive, trail maintenance and preserving the Pony Express
National Historic Trail.
