Bonsai Living Art in the Foothills

Welcome to the Lotus Bonsai Nursery and Gardens, one of your selected destinations along the El Dorado County “Farm Trails” network. Lotus Bonsai Garden

As you arrive you are greeted by a serene hillside covered with thousands of nature’s wonders. Trees that might be only 12” tall but appear as though they are “forest giants” greet the eye. Scott Chadd, the proprietor, began working with Bonsai 35 years ago when he returned from military service in Asia. The Lotus Bonsai Nursery has been in its current location for the past 20 years and is recognized throughout the United States as one of the best Bonsai nurseries.

Scott and his wife and partner, Bolet Salvador offer the widest range of products and supplies for all levels of interest in the art of Bonsai, from the master to the novice. There are about 300,000 trees in the nursery with 1,500 of them being styled-Bonsai in display containers. Over 3,000 Bonsai pots are for sale at the nursery. They range from very large ceramic pots from all over Asia to custom made high-fired clays produced by notable American artists. The nursery also offers a wide variety of Bonsai soils, tools, books and all products required for superior development and maintenance of Bonsai.

Scott and Bolet frequently travel throughout North America and Asia in search of unique, beautiful, and robust trees to add to their inventory. Every year Bonsai “Masters” from all over the world come to the nursery to do demonstrations and workshops, and work on improving the quality of trees at Lotus Bonsai Nursery. The busiest time at the nursery is from November until April. This is the season when the trees are dormant and much of the day is spent repotting, wiring, styling, and moving the Bonsai to larger pots. In the spring (April to June) the colors are truly amazing; flowers emerge, there Bonsaiare about 100 shades of green, and the nursery comes back to life from its winter slumber. In the summer, watering and trimming the trees to keep them small are the two most important tasks. Fall brings more amazing colors and remarkable changes when the Bonsai begin to ready themselves for their long winter sleep.

Many classes are offered at the Lotus Bonsai Nursery each year and Scott and Bolet do presentations for numerous groups. But, you are always welcome to call and come sit by the koi pond and enjoy the serenity, peace and beauty of these lovely gardens.
