Highway 50 was the first official U.S.
highway in California and it separates the county
as it winds its way from El Dorado Hills to
the west and South Lake Tahoe to the East.
Highway 49 is the oldest highway in the western
United States and winds its way north and south
through the county. At the crossroads of these two highways
is Historic Placerville with settlers coming to the area in about
1848. Placerville is the county seat of government yet holds
the historic cha rm of a bygone era.
From this central location, history, outdoor recreation of all
kinds, shopping, wineries, agricultural landscapes, lodging
facilities and dining establishments abound in all directions.
