Apples and Pumpkins and all things ripe
There's all kinds of fruit and baked goods on Apple Hill this month, but the big October item is the pumpkin. Besides making great Halloween jack o' lanterns, pumpkins are great for soup, pie, bread etc. So why not try cooking with this colorful vegetable?

Kids love stories about pumpkins, the faces you can make with them, and the whole fun atmosphere of October outdoors, with its walks in the woods and spooky associations. Where better than El Dorado County's Apple Hill to look for outdoor fun?

Chasing the Wild Pumpkin
At Mother Lode Orchards, Wild Pumpkin Season begins on October 5 and continues (on weekends ONLY) throughout the month. Kids can hunt a whole herd of wild pumpkin in the "Wild Pumpkin Preserve".

Pumpkin Tales
Be sure to visit Mother Lode Orchards on October 13 and 14. On those two days, at 12 pm and 2 PM, "Story Quilters" Cynthia Restivo and B.Z. Haunted Nature Trail

The market is open on Saturdays till mid-month from 8 a.m. to noon at the Ivy House Parking Lot on the Corner of Main Street and Cedar Ravine in Historic Placerville. Taste Award-winning Wines at The Oakstone Winery in Fair Play
The folks at Fair Play's Oakstone Winery have won awards for 70% of the 94 wines they entered in competitions in 2002. Their 1999 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon won Best of Class at the Long Beach, California Grand Cru International Wine Competition. Competing against 56 Cabernets, including wines from Beringer and Mondavi, they earned the Chairman's Award for the best Cabernet Sauvignon. They also received Best of Region at the California State Fair for their Slug Gulch Red, Lot#6. The Historic Camp Richardson Resort & Marina
This Lake Tahoe resort has over 300 campsites as well as cabins by the lake and a historic hotel. Their Mountain Sports Center rents bikes, snowshoes and cross-country skis. Llama-packing seminar with llama guru Rudy Stauffer of Crystal Springs Llamas, October 5 all day. -Fairplay Volkswalk
Join the International Volkswalk on October 19 for a 10-kilometer hilly trek through this major wine-producing area, which now has its own Fair Play appellation. -Annual Art & Wine Festival
On October 19 from 6pm-9pm, combine two loves, art and wine. Think deeply about your Christmas gift needs, because on Placerville's Historic Main Street, over 150 highly talented local artists will be exhibiting their wares. -'49er Family Festival

-Trick or Treat on Main Street

Coming in November

While plenty of late harvest fruits, pies, etc. are still available on Apple Hill®, El Dorado County is already preparing for Christmas. Placerville's Festival of Lights comes at the end of the month, and Christmas Tree Growers open the day after Thanksgiving. So get those roof racks on your vehicles and prepare for a fun ride to the country.
