Skiing the Sierra
By Kristi Schroeder
The fun does not stop when the snow flies.
For many people it has just begun. Whether you prefer the
serenity of a backcountry ski or the thrill of the downhill
runs there is no one way to see what El Dorado Count offers.
Snowshoeing allows the avid hiker or curious
first-timer a chance to get into the forest and enjoy this
ever-changing winter wonderland. Backcountry skiers and snowshoers
can explore the forest on their own to find that special place
or check out one of the following backcountry ski trail systems
to get started: the Loon Lake Winter Recreation Area, Echo
Lakes-Johnson Pass area, Echo Summit area, or the Strawberry
Canyon area.
For the avid downhill skiers and snowboarders
try both of the South Lake Tahoe's premier ski resorts. Heavenly
Ski Resort's 4,800-acre playground is filled with world-famous
groomers and legendary tree skiing - not to mention the hair-raising
steeps and those unforgettable views. Heavenly offers 86 trails,
29 lifts, on-mountain lodging, a 300-foot super-pipe, 3 terrain
parks, children's clinics, lessons, snowboarding, downhill
skiing, and Gondola and Tram rides.
Sierra-at-Tahoe is known for some of the
finest tree skiing imaginable, as well as having topnotch
freestyle terrain. From the resort's summit at 8,852 feet,
skiers and riders can enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Tahoe
and the surrounding mountains. With more than 2,000 skiable
acres, Sierra-at-Tahoe's activities include downhill skiing,
snowboarding, backcountry tours, showshoeing, events, lessons,
clinics, equipment rentals, day-care, lodging, restaurants,
express lifts and an awesome Tube Park.
Spectacular vistas and entertaining winter
recreation opportunities await people with all levels of experience
and interests.
